But now Jesus has attained a higher ministry because the covenant He gives is also better and is being implemented for better promises. For if this first alliance had been perfect, there would have been no opportunity to seek a second. For he criticizes them when he says, «Behold, the days are coming,» says the Lord, «I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not as the covenant I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not keep my covenant, and therefore I did not care about them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after these days, saith the Lord: I will put my laws in their spirits, and I will write them in their hearts, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. And they will not teach, each his neighbor and each his brother, saying, «Know the Lord,» for they will all know me, from the smallest to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their sins, and I will no longer remember their sins. When he speaks of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what becomes obsolete and ages is ready to disappear. For if this first alliance had been perfect, there would have been no opportunity to seek a second. In the same way, he also partook of the cup after the sacrament and said, «This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do it as often as you drink it, in memory of me. But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after these days, says the Lord: I will put my law in them, and I will write it in their hearts.

And I will be their God, and they will be my people. But the Old Covenant or Moses had three fundamental flaws. First, although there was a high priest who regularly offered animal sacrifice for their sins, such sacrifices could never fully and definitively ensure their forgiveness. «For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins» (Hebrews 10:4). What does the Bible mean when it speaks of a new covenant between us and God? The new covenant is the ultimate solution to human rebellion. It`s in the Bible, Jeremiah 31:33, NKJV. «This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after this time,» says the Lord. «I will put My Law in their minds and write it in their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Now, if you truly obey my voice and keep my covenant, you will be my precious possession among all nations, for all the earth is mine; Hagar here is related to the Old Covenant, the covenant made at Mount Sinai and Paul`s time in Jerusalem. This alliance produces child slaves, and all those under the Old Covenant are enslaved.

Paul was baffled as to why the Galatians were tempted to fall into this slavery (verse 9), an Old Covenant slavery that involved the observance of special days and months, seasons, and years (verse 10). Paul then makes his point, again from Scripture, which the people respected: «But what does Scripture say?» Get rid of the slave and her son, for the son of the slave will never share the inheritance with the son of the free woman» (verse 30; Genesis 21:10). The application is clear: get rid of those who teach the Old Covenant. Do not listen to them, for they will not inherit Abraham`s promises (5:2). «Behold, the days come,» saith the Lord, «because I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not as the covenant I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, even though I was her husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after these days, says the Lord: I will put my law in them, and I will write it in their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be my people. And not every one will teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, «Know the Lord,» for they will all know me, from the smallest to the greatest, says the Lord. For I will forgive their sins, and I will remember their sins no more. (2) But what is needed for a New Covenant between God and His people? Why wasn`t the old covenant with Moses good enough for everyone and for all times? When I say that the Ancient or Mosaic Covenant was not «good enough,» I am not saying that it was not «good.» It was. It was an unprecedented blessing for the people of Israel. He gave them laws to regulate their behavior.

She promised them spiritual, material, and even military blessings if they obeyed this law and remained faithful to the covenant. God even instituted the office of high priest in this covenant so that people would have someone to offer sacrifices on their behalf and represent them in God`s presence. This ancient covenant provided for a sacrificial system in which the blood of bulls and goats allowed them, at least temporarily, to remain in communion with God. The Old Covenant under Moses was filled with grace, mercy, long-suffering, and love. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, «And in your seed shall be blessed all the families of the earth.» «Is the law, then, contrary to God`s promises? No way! For if a law had been given that could mediate in life, then surely righteousness would have come through the law» (verse 21). The law did not abolish the promise of salvation by faith, for it was not intended as another means of salvation. If there was a way for the laws to give us the right position with God, God would have given us those laws. But the law of Moses is not meant to give us eternal life. Hebrews is a declaration of the absolute supremacy of Jesus Christ. Hebrews tells us that Jesus is superior to angels (chap.

1-2), Moses is superior (3-4:13) and superior to Aaron (4:14-7). He is a higher priesthood (8–10:18) and has made a higher covenant (10:19–13). As Israel`s history progresses, Israel experiences the curses of the Moses covenant. They are threatened with judgment, and in the end God actually renders the judgment of exile on them because they have broken the old covenant, the Mosaic covenant. «This is the covenant I will make with them after these days,» says the Lord, «I will lay my laws on their hearts and write them in their minds.» Throughout Hebrews, we find this emphasis on what is new and better.
